What Is the Best Age to Start Martial Arts?
By Master Gerald Riley · 3 min read

Is four too young? Is forty too old? Here's what parents and adults should know about the right age to begin.
There's No Single Right Age
The best age to start martial arts is the age you are right now. That said, different ages bring different strengths and needs.
Ages 4–6: Building the Foundation
Young children focus on listening skills, balance, coordination and basic movements. Classes are energetic and fun, with lots of positive encouragement. At Master Riley's, we welcome students starting at age four.
Ages 7–12: Skill and Character
School-age kids can learn more complex techniques and forms. This is a great age for building focus, respect and confidence that support success in school.
Teens: Strength and Leadership
Teenagers develop real power, athleticism and leadership. Martial arts gives them a positive outlet and a community during challenging years.
Adults: Fitness and Self-Defense
Adults gain fitness, stress relief and practical self-defense. Many start alongside their children and train as a family.
