Hapkido vs. Taekwondo: What's the Difference?
By Master Gerald Riley · 3 min read

Both are Korean martial arts, but they train very different skills. Learn how Hapkido and Taekwondo compare — and complement each other.
Two Korean Arts, Two Approaches
Taekwondo and Hapkido both come from Korea, but they emphasize different ranges and techniques.
Taekwondo: Speed and Kicking Power
Taekwondo is famous for its fast, high and spinning kicks. Training focuses on footwork, striking, forms and sport sparring. It is an Olympic sport and excellent for athleticism and conditioning.
Hapkido: Control at Close Range
Hapkido focuses on joint locks, throws, escapes and pressure points. It teaches how to redirect an attacker's energy and control situations at close range.
Key Differences
- Range: Taekwondo excels at kicking distance; Hapkido at grappling distance
- Style: Taekwondo is linear and explosive; Hapkido is circular and flowing
- Goal: Taekwondo builds athletic striking; Hapkido builds practical control
Why Train Both?
Combining the two gives you a complete toolkit: the ability to keep distance and strike, plus the ability to escape and control if someone gets close. That's why Master Riley's offers both programs.
Which Should You Start With?
Most students begin with Taekwondo to build a foundation of fitness and technique, then add Hapkido as they progress.
