Nervous about your first class? Here's exactly what happens, what to wear, and how to feel prepared.

First-Class Nerves Are Normal

Everyone feels a little nervous before their first class. Knowing what to expect can help you walk in with confidence.

What to Wear

Comfortable athletic clothes like a t-shirt and workout pants work perfectly. Taekwondo is practiced barefoot, so no special shoes are needed. Once you enroll, you'll get information about your uniform (dobok).

What to Bring

  • A water bottle
  • A positive attitude
  • A parent or guardian for younger students

How Class Is Structured

  • Bow in and greeting
  • Warm-up and stretching
  • Basic techniques: stances, blocks, punches and kicks
  • Drills or pad work
  • Cool down and bow out

Etiquette Basics

Bow when entering and leaving the training floor, listen carefully to your instructor and treat classmates with respect. Don't worry about being perfect — instructors will guide you.

After Class

You may feel a little sore the next day — that's normal and means your body is adapting. Most importantly, you'll likely feel proud and energized.
