5 Essential Taekwondo Kicks Every Beginner Learns
By Master Gerald Riley · 3 min read

Taekwondo is famous for its kicks. Here are five foundational kicks you'll learn early — and tips to improve each one.
The Foundation of Taekwondo
Kicks are at the heart of Taekwondo. Mastering the basics builds the foundation for advanced, spinning and jumping techniques.
1. Front Kick (Ap Chagi)
A fast, straight kick using the ball of the foot. Lift the knee high, snap the leg out and pull it back quickly.
2. Roundhouse Kick (Dollyeo Chagi)
The most common kick in sparring. Pivot on your supporting foot, turn your hips and strike with the top of the foot.
3. Side Kick (Yeop Chagi)
A powerful kick driven by the hips, striking with the heel or blade of the foot.
4. Back Kick (Dwit Chagi)
A strong kick that turns your back to the target before driving the heel backward.
5. Axe Kick (Naeryeo Chagi)
The leg rises high and comes straight down, striking with the heel.
Tips for Better Kicks
- Chamber your knee before every kick
- Pivot your supporting foot
- Keep your hands up for balance and protection
- Practice slowly to perfect technique before adding speed
