Competing can be one of the most rewarding parts of Taekwondo. Here's how tournaments work and how to prepare.

Why Compete?

Tournaments challenge students to perform under pressure, set goals and learn from both wins and losses.

Common Tournament Events

  • Sparring: scored matches with protective gear
  • Forms (poomsae): judged on precision, power and presentation
  • Breaking: demonstrations of power and technique

Who Can Compete?

Students of all ages and belt levels can compete, with divisions grouped by age, rank and sometimes weight.

How to Prepare

  • Train consistently and follow your instructor's guidance
  • Practice your forms daily
  • Work on conditioning and endurance
  • Get plenty of rest before the event

Handling Nerves

Feeling nervous is normal. Focus on doing your best rather than winning. Every tournament is a learning experience.

Master Riley has coached athletes into becoming national champions, and students regularly bring home gold and silver medals — even in their first tournaments.
